Dufferin Mall is committed to sustainability and has a number of initiatives in place to help create a more eco-conscious shopping centre.
Urban Beehive
Since 2021, Dufferin Mall has partnered with Alveole to install and maintain an urban beehive on our property. This initiative contributes to increasing local honey production and pollination. Our beehive also produces around 100 130g jars of honey each year. The funds raised from the sale of this honey are donated to a local charity. In 2024, the funds raised from the sale of the honey were donated to Parkdale Community Food Bank.
Please click here to visit our MyHive page and learn more about our beehive.
Food Court Sorting Stations - Working Towards Zero Waste
You'll notice there are no more waste bins in our Food Court. Since August 2023, all trash bins in our food court have been removed and replaced with two sorting stations that sort all waste generated by our food court (organics, plastics, containers, etc.) in order to streamline and eliminate landfill waste. Please take all Food Court waste to the sorting stations located near Marry Me Mochi and in-front of Popeyes.
We have recently partnered with Chop Value (https://chopvalue.com) to begin chop stick recycling. Chop Value collects when needed and the chopsticks are recycled into tables, seating, wall paneling and other items.
EV Charging Stations
There are four Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations located in our Parking Garage on P1 and P2.
Electronics and Battery Recycling Program
Drop off your unwanted small electronics and used batteries to our bin located on the P1 level of our parking garage near the elevators.
Gift Card Recycling
Recycle your old and used gift cards at our Guest Services desk.
Other Sustainability Programs
Parking Garage: LED lighting has been installed to increase and balance light levels. The new lighting system/fixture has an integrated sensor to minimize the overall consumption and save on costs.
Public Washrooms: A high efficiency gas water heater has been installed, replacing the previous electric water heater.
Installation of a solar powered Rain Water Irrigation System. This allows for us to collect and store rainwater to water our Rooftop Garden and other green areas around the property.
Common Area Rooftop: Replaced the fan motor to a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) to optimize energy saving on the HVAC system.
Paper, Glass and Plastic Recycling: Recycling bins have been placed throughout the shopping centre.
Organics Recycling: Dufferin Mall has a number of dedicated organics recycling for all of our food court tenants.
